As a small business owner, there’s no doubt that your presence is a crucial factor influencing the success of your company. Nonetheless, it is also true that you are frequently busy, and from time to time, you may need to get work done from a hotel, from a coffee shop, or (don’t tell anyone!) from the comfort of your living room. When this is the case, it is important to remember that productivity is not automatic: in order to thrive in a remote environment, discipline, focus, and a bit of self-awareness are all very important assets. Here are three quick tips that can help you make the most of your remote work time.

  1. Set Goals. Having a goal to work towards can keep you motivated and concentrating even when things get tough. It gives you a clear objective and a clear idea of when your workday will be over.
  2. Set Timeframes. Working alone, one can lose track of time, so setting timeframes for your work may be a wise idea. This can keep you moving forward (in order to accomplish your goals within the established timeframe) while also preventing you from overdoing it. (Setting a finish time and break times can actually boost productivity, as counter intuitive a it may sound.)
  3. Set Limits. Speaking of overdoing it, setting a few limits with yourself and with those around you can also be a big help. For example, there’s nothing wrong with letting your family know that you have established a certain time in which you will be working and “unavailable.” (This is especially important if you do not have a home office, or if you are working from an unusual location.) Communication is the key to success, both professionally and interpersonally.
