According to the Houston Chronicle’s very useful small business guide, organizational efficiency is defined as an “organization’s ability to implement its plans using the smallest possible expenditure of resources.” The benefits of improved organizational efficiency are obvious — but the methods by which you can achieve this lofty goal are not always so clear. That’s why we’ve compiled this helpful list of five ways to improve organizational efficiency.

  1. Communication. Creating a culture of open communication is important for fostering efficiency. When lower level employees feel comfortable voicing their concerns, for instance, management is able to respond more effectively to problems. And when employees of any level are able to communicate freely and effectively, teamwork and efficient cooperation tend to increase. In addition to company culture, establishing procedures for documentation and implementing technological solutions for information sharing can also make a big difference.
  2. Automate. When software and/or robotics can replace a rote human function, it’s usually for the better. Let your employees focus on the creative, adaptive, and interpersonal aspects of your business, and leave repetition and calculation to machines.
  3. Outsource. Functions that fall outside your range of expertise (i.e. social media marketing, HR management, or computer programing) should generally be outsourced to experts in order to allow you to spend your own time more effectively.
  4. Avoid Excessive Meetings. Yes, communication is important — but more often than not, a small meeting followed by the sharing of a concise memo will be more effective and efficient than making the entire team drop their work and sit in on a meeting that is mostly irrelevant to their daily work.
  5. Let Employees Work From Home. As this Entrepreneur article addresses, a wealth of data suggests that allowing employees to work remotely when possible offers a wide range of potential benefits, including increased efficiency and output.
